Abstract

The evaluation of Scrophularia striata effects on the growth of Leishmania major under in vitro and in vivo conditions. Scrophularia striata was collected then cleaned, dried and powdered. To obtain water extrat this powder boiled in water and purified. The Leishmania parasite was purchased and cultured in RPMI medium. Anti-promastigote assays were carried out using direct counting assay based on growth inhibition. After treatmen wiyh different concentration of water extract the promastigotes were counted via hemocytometer with a light microscope by direct counting method, for confirmation of promastigote assay we employed MTT method. The statistical methods used in this study were based on normal confidence intervals and analysis of variance (ANOVA). In treatment of promastigotes of Leishmania major with Scrophularia striata extract at the concentration of 25, the parasites were killed at the day three (P=0.001). These results indicated this extract had favorable effect on apoptosis of L. major on the culture medium; and thus Scrophularia striata have a reasonable antileishmaniasis activity in vitro conditions. The Scrophularia striata wtery extract has efficient anti-leishmaniasis activity.
