Abstract

Bone tissue engineering represents a new approach for simulation extra cellular matrix by fabrication biomimetic scaffold. In this paper we introduce a novel method to fabricate various hydroxyapatite (HA) porous scaffolds by Naphthalene and poly ethylene glycol (PEG) with specific size particles as pore former agent. HA powder was synthesized using wet precipitation method. For preparing samples the raw materials were mixed, subsequently were injected into cylindrical mold. Finally drying and sintering processes applied to produce HA porous scaffold. Chemical, physical and mechanical properties were explored by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mechanical and porosity measurements analysis. The results shown that the mechanical properties of HA porous scaffolds prepared using Naphthalene and PEG as pore former were 10.83 +/- 1.68 and 4.04 +/- 0.45 MPa respectively and results illustrated similarity with natural trabecular bone compressive strength. XRD patterns demonstrated just characteristic of HA. Morphological characteristics was investigated with SEM, it was observed that the prepared scaffolds had pores with pore size range 50-120 mu M that is appropriate for osteoblast cell adhesion. These results demonstrate that the manufactured scaffolds are suitable candidate for trabecular bone tissue engineering and bone void filler.
