Abstract

Improvement in eye treatments can take place on three fronts: advances in surgery techniques, advances in implant designs, and developments in biomaterials. A wide range of natural or synthetic materials has been used in ophthalmology. The selection of suitable biomaterials can increase the success of procedures used to maintain and improve vision.Several biomaterials have been used for design and optimization of eye implants. Polymethylmethacrylate, acrylic, and silicone are three examples of such biocompatible materials. In this chapter, we review the history, properties, development, and recent advances in the application of these biomaterials in intracorneal rings, intraocular lens, artificial cornea, and glaucoma drainage devices. © 2019 Elsevier Inc.
